The former Syntocinon nasal spray was discontinued, and today's nasal sprays are compounded. Compounded nasal preparations are not reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness or manufacturing quality before they are dispensed. No consumer dose of intranasal oxytocin has been established, long-term intranasal safety has not been characterized, and the largest randomized trials of intranasal oxytocin in autism, obesity and trust did not beat placebo on their primary endpoints. Oxytocin contracts the uterus, which is the purpose of the approved injectable drug, and its label describes water intoxication with convulsions as a serious complication of large prolonged infusions.
